I was looking at my cars rear bumper and I noticed something that I had not before. All my other A's have a bumper brace (painted black) going from one side of the car to the other, just behind the rear bumper. My A-400 did not have one. I kind of bumped into the rear bumper and the bumper began to swing from side to side. I looked in the judging standards and saw that the rear bumper brace was changed in 31 to have reinforcements on the sides where the bolts go through. Anyway, looking at the back of my car, it doesnt look like the bumper brace would look very attractive on there, with that fancy fake gas tank thing like on a 32,  but the bumper needs it. Does an A-400 get this part? Thanks again.

The rear cross brace is optonal. See page B-4 of the Judging Standards, and the attached photo from the Ford archives

This photo has been the source of much misinformation about the A-400. It is a prototype photo taken in March 1931, part of a set of photos from differing angles. If you look close, you'll see it has the standard type rear view mirror, a painted wiper motor, 7 snaps on each top rail, and other features not found on any surviving A-400s. This car does not even have a side mounted spare or any provision for the spare.

See my A-400 Group newletter from May 1976 for a thorough discussion of these early photos. Under Resources, Phil Allin's Newsletters.
