On my A400 (#1648) the original floorboards were covered on the top side with a felt material. Has anyone else found this on their A400? Was the purpose sound suppression or to keep the carpets from slipping?

Phil:
I've got a similar coarse, brown, almost horsehair like felt material under the mat of my original '31 roadster, but it is not attached to the floorboards. It's obviously been there for some time. My assumption has always been that was added by a former owner for sound or heat insulation. The original floorboards from my A400 show no sign of ever having such a material attached to them. The original parts books don't list any underlayment for the floor covering so my guess would be that in both of our cases the material was added after the car left the factory.

This material is not wrapped around the floorboards - just a layer on the top surface. It may be glued in place. It is a khaki color and as thin as most felt. It would seem to help keep the carpet in place, though the snap fasteners should do the job.
