Was the male dovetail that is installed on the door painted body color or does it get plated?

I see that one instance in the early reference material says it was nickel but I'm not sure if that is correct. Most that I have seen (not original) have been painted.

The ones on my car are chrome, but they are repops.

On my original care these dovetails were plated. I have also noted stainless dovetails on other original cars.
