I haven't been able to find any information on the finish for this part. I think it is part A-402268. This is the small piece that is attached to the metal part of the #4 bow and sits on the red bumper (A-402206) when the top is folded down.
Is it nickel plated or painted the same as the top irons ? What about the machine scew and nut ? Is there a lock washer to be used ? Mine didn't have any lock washers.
Thanks
Larry Gilbert
If we are talking of the same part. All I've ever seen, which is several, have a small rivet thru them...permenantly affixed. No screw or lockwasher. They were nickle plated I beleive. I usually replace them with some I make out of stainless instead if they are in bad shape...which they usually are...or missing!
As to the red bumper, I've taken several off that looked original and I thought they were just black or dark grey bumpers. Please enlighten me.
Bill, thanks for the reply.
The red bumper I was refering to is shown in the Nov. 2007 newsletter with parts reproduced by Bob Johnson. My originals were red but only the lower portion remained.
My bumper plates had been removed at some point in time. They were actually re-installed upside down with a machine screw and nut. Can you give me any additional info on the rivet that was originally used? Size, type of head, what side was the head on, etc.
How certain are you on the nickel plating for this part? What finish have some of you others found on original cars?
I'll check my oritinals on that rivet. As to certainty on plating, I've sanblasted those before and noticed some sort of plating. Most likely nickle.
As to Bob Johnson's red bum, pers. Aren't those for the header. I've found remnants of those round bumpers in the header but not where the pad for the #4 sits. Or am I totally turned around?? The ones that sit down in the pocket where #4 folds down is about a 7/8" round by 3/8" thick black rubber pad, I think.
Bill, look on page #11 of the Nov. 2007 newsletter. There is a picture of Bob Johnson's top bumpers including the red one I refer to. My originals were the same color, what was left of them.
Hi Larry:
As to the small bumper on the #4 bow, mine is rivited to the bow and was painted. There may have been plating underneath the original paint prior to my sandblasting, I don't recall.
