Hi The Murray Data Plate (body tag) is attached to the firewall with rivets or pan head screws. Can someone let me know what size the screws are. Thanks. Joop

Joop - the body tag was indeed affixed with pan head sheet metal screws; at least that is the case for three tags that I know of that haven't been molested.  I do not, however, know how to measure pan head screws.  I have a machine screw guage; can it be used to measure sheet metal screws???  Timothy

Here is a photo of the body tag in john Page's original A400 which has only 9000 miles on it. This shows the pan head sheet metal screws. I have these but they are now at the shop where the body work is being done. I will be going down to the body ship in about three and will get measurements if you want me to.

I think the only way to find the size is to take it to a hardware store and have them check it out Thanks

Joop:  Today I was able to spend some time in the shop, so I measured the screws which attach the data tag.  According to my measurements they are:  1)  size - number "8" pan head sheet metal screw, 2) one half inch long, and 3) the diameter of the head measures .312, which is 4.992 / 16th inch....which I suspect is a nominal size 5/16th.

I hope this helps.

Timothy

Hi Timothy. Thanks for your reply. I just read the Restorer article from Ed Rossig in 1966 and he mentioned #6 x 1/4 screws #32907-S. Would they be the same? Joop

I would be careful.  The modern screw heads are shaped radically different in some cases.  A good example is to find a good replacement for the screws that hold the front edge of the gas tank.  They have a unique profile from the side.

The tank screws Roy sells are close but not quite right.  The slot is different, the profile is different, and the shank diameter at the base is slightly smaller so the washers hang funny.  So you have to look at many charactoristics before selecting a screw.

The profile of the gas tank pan head screws were mentioned and for what it is worth, I obtained the correct style pan head screw in stainless steel.  The diameter was slightly oversize and the profile a little different, but the slot size was fine.  I then reduced the diameter size and reshaped the edge with a grinding wheel and then sanded out the scraches and bead blasted in order to simulate an unfinished piece.  Turned out great.  The same approach could be used for the body tag pan head screws.
