Does anyone know whether there is someone out there reproducing Murry body number plates for the A400. I'm sure I have read that someone was screen printing the 400 on the plate then stamping them with your body number.

I know that A400 owner Jim Romanella of Westerly, RI  had small run of A400 body data plates run on an aluminum tag blank some years ago. I'm not sure if he has any left. They were very close to original in terms of artwork, the primary difference being that the original tags were made of zinc. I don't think that Jim had any number stamps to put the body number on the tag, but I would imagine that most jewelery stores that do engraving could accomodate providing that you had a sample of  what the numbers should look like. I also remember Larry Machacek of the Cabriolet Club offering to do number stamping. It's possible that he might have a set of original style number stamps.

Go ahead and contact Gwen Machacek.  They made a run of 400A body plates and will stamp them with your number.  They are on aluminum but look nice.

I knew I should have taken the time to look up their address.  Sorry about that.

The last address I have for them is Larry and Gwyn Machacek, P.O. Box 1487, Conroe Texas 77305

The body tags offered by Gwen Machacek are very nice, except they are made from aluminum.  They will stamp your number on the tag and the cost is $30.00 postage paid.  They made a tag for me several years ago and with the exception of one number it was dead on.  I worked with Gwen in connection with the Station Wagon tag several years ago in connection with the body tag and we were able to provide her with original tags in order that the numbers could be made so that they duplicated the original.  I am sure she would consider the same for the A-400.  I have numbers 1,8 and 2 so we would need to find members who could provide tags with the remaining numbers.  I presently have a call into Gwen about this possibility.

For about the past year and a half, I have been searching for zinc sheets which are .025 ths. thick to no avail.  If anyone knows of a source, this would be helpful information as Gwen would like to make the tags out of the proper material.

Try contacting Al Lepore at A&L Parts in CT. He actually provided me with a small sheet of zinc some years back when I was playing around with reproducing the A400 tag. Part of what I learned at the time was that it is MUCH more difficult to silk screen on zinc than it is on Aluminum which is why most reproduction tags are done on aluminum.

I notice that A&L shows zinc material Murray Body number plates in their latest catalog. Has anyone seen or bought one of these? I am about to order one if no one has seen them.

Would like your assessement of the tag if you purchase one...........If it is "dead on", this would be an invaluable resource to the restorer............

I would like to tell you about my Murray A400 body number tags.  I had the tags made by an etching company, they are not silk screened.  The company could not make them in zinc because they did not have a source, but I will investigate the website that has been provided in this discussion page.  As Tim said my body tags are right on. You would not believe how many times I had the graphic person , who did the art work, change a letter or space (which cost me!), but I wanted it right.  I am lucky that I have done business with a decal company whose graphic person knows what "reproduction" means.  Some graphic persons just try to get close -- if they can't push a button on the computer to get the look, they are lost.   The 400 is also etched in the tag, while the other reproduction tags do not have this feature.  I do have all of the numbers 0-9 to stamp any number on my tags.  These are the correct  font, going to an engraver will not get it.  (The Victoria Group helped me out on this - their body tag numbers have the same font as the A400 tags.)  The tag is $20 (I only had 50 tags made, thus the reason for the high price), and stamping the requested number is $10.  Any questions call me at 936-441-8209      Gwyn Machacek       PO Box 1487     Conroe, TX  77305

For some reason the dates on these replies appear as 2005 on my computer. Wrong? Are these messages that old?

I bought some data plates from Snyder's (part #A-18651 for Murray, and #A-18652 for Briggs) and the cost advertised is $1.50.

I have an engravograph, and I would be glad to install your "400-XXXX" as it appears on the original plate for $5.00/pp. It is etched with a diamond-pointed cutter. Mine looks nice.

I may be bitingoff more than I can chew, but I'll try. Send me an e-mail message and I'll see how much response I get.

Bill, the body tags you are referring to from Snyder's  --  are these the old reproduction brass tags with yellow paint?  Originally the tags were made from a zinc material with the colored sections being in black.  Plus, the tag had 400 imprinted in the data section.  How close are your numbers to the original style -- size and font?

Oh, yes the previous replies were back in 2005.  Gwyn

Texasmania - Thank you for the info. I just received a message from Gwyn, and she really set me straight. I have been in the A-400 family since I bought my car in May 1954 and I learn something new every day.

I am withdrawing my offer.
