Tom Moniz asked: I have seen in print that the A400 had a shorter rear bumper. Does anyone know of an original car with a shorter rear bumper?

Phil Allin Replys: I remember that Ed Rossig had stated that the A400 had a rear bumper 4” shorter than the front. This was in his “1st Supplement” (1964) to the A400 Manual. However, this was based on his examination of the Ford Archives photo from April 1931. This photo is on the front of A400 Group newsletter #5, which has a detailed analysis of the Ford Archives photos including the misleading features in this photo.
We have found no surviving A400s with a rear bumper shorter than the front.
This point also came up when we were working on the Convertible Sedan supplement to the MARC-MAFCA Judging Standards. The committee required confirmation in Ford documents for statements such as this. The absence of any mention in the Ford Parts books ruled it out.
Logic also works against the idea. In production the A400 bodies would arrive at the assembly line to be bolted to completed chassis. Do you really believe that the bumper would be changed at that stage? What would be the reason for a shorter rear bumper?
