I am trying to have this part reproduced and would find it very helpful to have an original part in good condition to use as as a sample for the moldmaker. I have the Ford print in hand. Does anyone have an original B-402262 part that I could buy or borrow?
Many thanks,
A400 Guy

I am working on a mold to make the B-402262 bumper. It is not an easy
part to make. I am trying to follow the Ford drawings. I will be making
the "master" in several pices then "glue" them together. The first
piece I am working on is the "tail" which inserts into the hole in the
car. It is a complicated piece. I am posting a picture to help explain
my concerns. The image on the left is from the Ford drawing, The center
image is a piece of plastic that I have "carved" to the specifications
in the drawing. The image on the right is a template I made which
matches the dimensions in the drawing. I tried to make the plastic part
just like my template. It still needs some work. I am concerned that
the template I made does not match the Ford drawing. Where the drawings
exact or just approximation of the actual part?
The picture of my plastic paer is of one of the ends. The ends have
some irreularities that are not found in the rest of the piece. For
anyone who cares I am using a wood routter and several standard bits to
"carve" the profile. It take a while to set up because the router and
table are not meant to make such precise cuts. So on the curves I have
to nibble away a little at a time. The I use some custom scrapers that
I made from steel to smooth out the curves.
The knotch on the top of the plastic bar is a tenon that I will use to mate it to the rest of the "master".
It might be useful if I were to cut a 1/8" cross section from the piece
of plastic and send it to someone who could see if it fits into the
hole in the car. Anyone without a bumper already installed care to test
it?

The master is coming along. I made the other 2 pieces and have put them
together. This time I used aluminum to make the pieces. I pinned them
togther and also used epoxy. When the epoxy hardens I will trim off the
extra metal (see red lines in picture). Then attach the tail. After a
little smoothing it will be ready to make the mold.

I will have these masters made if you want me too. You will probably have them made by the time you read this but if you continue to have difficulty they can be easily made in our tool room. I want to thank you for making all these special parts for the A400. It is really appreciated.

Bill,
Thanks for the offer. I am getting real close now so I think I can
finish it. Plus that would take all the fun out of it. I get some
satisfaction out of doing things with limited resources. If it gets too
hard I will contact you. Here is the latest condition of the part. All
I have left is to connect the tail and clean it up a little.

OK, master is complete. After a little cleanup it should be ready to
make the mold. This is one strange looking part. I followed the Frod
drawing as best as I could. Once I make some copies I will send them
out to you guys and you can let me know if they fit.

Mold is done. Once it is cured I will see what kind of a bumper it
makes. There is going to be some "flash" where the 2 mold halves meet.
And there is going to be a spur at the top where the liquid rubber is
poured in. I will cut it off but it will leave a rough spot there. You
will see once I make a sample.

Here is the first try. There are lots of small air bubbles in this one.
This is often the case in the first casting. The mold still has some
residual water and that causes the bubbles. I will let the mold cure a
little more then try again. I can also position the in such a way that
the bubbles, if any, form on the backside where they will not be seen.
It is always trial and error.

Will you offer these for sale when your finished? Will they be sold by the piece or a whole 'bumper' package? If so PLEASE put me on the wait list. You are doing fantastic work and I am very intrigued with the proccess, please keep it up with more pictures. Steve Ryan
P.S. If you need a 'test car', I plan to drive mine to the MARC National meet in MI. this summer. I should clock in at 1,800 miles that week. (always someone looking for a freebe)

Bob,
Excellent work on the rubber/bumper parts, add me to your list as well. I will need all the rubber/bumper components you make as a set or individually.
Thanks......Model-A-Man
